Three Men Arrested on Drug Smuggling Charges in Santa Clarita

December 31, 2013

An alleged drug smuggling trio was arrested on the morning of December 22 on felony charges of attempting to smuggle drugs and drug paraphernalia into Pitchess Detention Center, a jail in Castaic. They were booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, according to a report by signalscv.com.

The three men were of various age and occupations. One was a 23-year-old factory worker. Another was a 30-year-old dispatcher. The third man was a 32-year-old landscaper. They are among many who were arrested on similar charges in 2013, with multiple alleged crimes involving Pitchess Detention Center workers.

One such case involved a civilian laundry supervisor who had been working for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for more than a dozen years. He and another long-time employee were arrested on suspicion of smuggling narcotics into the South Facility of Pitchess Detention Center. After being arrested and booked by the Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau, he immediately resigned.

Another surprising case involved a 61-year-old attorney. He was charged with two counts of conspiracy, one felony count of smuggling drugs into jail, one felony count of transportation of a controlled substance, and one felony count of smuggling a firearm into a jail.

California Penal Code Section 4573 (a) states: “Except when otherwise authorized by law, or when authorized by the person in charge of the prison or other institution … any person, who knowingly brings into or sends into … any state prison … or any other place where prisoners of the state are located under the custody of prison officials … any controlled substance … any device, contrivance, instrument, or paraphernalia intended to be used for unlawfully injecting or consuming a controlled substance, is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for two, three, or four years.”
