3 Common Los Angeles Holiday Crimes

Posted by Daniel Kann | Dec 22, 2019 | 0 Comments

The Holidays have people bustling about getting ready for festivities. From gift shopping to party going it's a wonderful time of the year. However, it can also be a crime-filled time of the Year.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, while the holiday season is a special time of year, it is “also a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime.” Three of these common holiday crimes include:

  1. Theft Crimes—During the holidays, theft crimes tend to spike. From grabbing purses and shopping bags with recent purchases, to taking cash right after an ATM withdrawal or nabbing gifts out of cars, holiday theft can happen almost anywhere.

Though grand theft requires the value of the items stolen to exceed $950, taking a lower valued item can still result in petty theft criminal charges. Consequences for theft can be serious and include jail time, fines, probation, and even a felony on your record (in the case of grand theft).

  1. Driving Violations—During the holidays, many people are in a hurry which can lead to traffic violations such as speeding or even running red lights. The holidays also tend to mean more parties and thus more drinking. Far too often, drivers get on the road after drinking and end up facing DUI  charges.

When it comes to traffic tickets, the consequences can be frustrating and expensive. When it comes to a more serious DUI charge, the consequences can be life altering, including jail time, fines, and a record.

  1. Burglary—The appeal of homes filled with Christmas gifts can lead to an increase in burglary. Burglary is different from theft—under California law burglary is the act of entering a structure (residential, commercial, or any other type of property) with the intent to commit theft, larceny, or other felony. This crime can be charged as a misdemeanor or felony depending on the circumstances and includes consequences such as jail, fines, and strikes (if charged as a felony).

During this holiday season, you certainly don't want to end up facing criminal charges. However, if you or someone you care about is facing charges for one of these or any other holiday crime, then you will want to get in touch with a Los Angeles criminal defense lawyer.

It's important to know that there are defenses available to these serious criminal charges—An experienced criminal defense attorney at Kann California Defense Group can help you navigate your case, so contact us today at 888-744-7730.
