Recently CBS Los Angeles reported that a Corona man was arrested after hitting a motorcyclist and fleeing the scene. The accident occurred on the 91 Freeway--a driver of a minivan struck the motorcyclist, sending him flying nearly 200 feet away. The driver, however, did not stop after hitting the motorcyclist.
A nearby car saw what happened and started following the minivan, filming the incident. The video shows the driver speeding away with the motorcycle still wrapped around the front of the vehicle. The car pushed the motorcycle until it eventually crashed into the fence, and the driver fled on foot. However, police were able to eventually find and arrest the driver.
Miraculously, the motorcyclist Chain Arunritthirot, was not seriously injured in the accident. However, he did have injuries causing pain to his arms and legs, as is to be expected in a motorcycle collision like this one. In this case, because the hit-and-run driver was found, he can bring a personal injury claim against the driver responsible for his injuries. This claim is a civil claim and can be brought in addition to any criminal charges the driver may be facing for fleeing the scene of the accident.
Motorcycle Accident Injuries
Anytime a motorcycle accident occurs, it is important for the motorcyclist to get medical attention--even if the injuries don't seem serious initially like in this case, a fall or crash from a motorcycle can leave lingering pain and lasting injuries. Because a motorcyclist is not protected by a barrier to the outside as he or she would be in a car, injuries in the case of an accident can be much more severe. Injuries can range from painful bruising caused by the fall or arm and leg injuries, to broken bones, and more serious head, back and neck injuries. Any of these injuries can result in missing work in order to recover, medical expenses for care, and make day to day physical activities more difficult.
Personal Injury Damages
The purpose of a personal injury claim is to help an injured person receive financial compensation for their injuries. An experienced Corona motorcycle accident attorney can help a victim of a motorcycle accident bring a claim against the driver, and help the victim get this compensation they deserve. Compensation available in a personal injury claim is meant to help the victim recover from their losses and can be obtained for:
- Medical bills, including hospital stays and ambulance costs
- Lost wages from missing work, including compensation for sick or vacation days used when recovering
- Pain and suffering, missed activities, and other damages available under California law.
