Free Willy Actor Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

Posted by Dan Kann | Mar 23, 2019 | 0 Comments

According to a report by the San Bernardino Sun, Jason James Richter was arrested in the San Fernando Valley on suspicion of domestic violence. Richter is known for his role as Jesse in the 1990s Free Willy movie series.

Richter and his girlfriend allegedly got into an argument at their home in the evening. His girlfriend, “ran to the bedroom and locked the door, Richter broke the door down and a source said ‘it got physical.'” Later that night, the girlfriend went to the police and filed a domestic violence report.

Richter was subsequently arrested and released when he posted $20,000 bail. His girlfriend told police that Richter grabbed her by the wrists during the altercation, though no visible marks were left. Richter is now facing charges of one count of vandalism and another count of domestic battery.

The charge of Ventura misdemeanor domestic battery charge is found in California Penal Code Section 243 (e)(1). To be convicted for domestic battery penal code section 243(e)(1) requires that the prosecution prove you “willfully inflicted unlawful force or violence on your intimate partner.” Although this may seem simple, it entails a lot of elements and means the outcome of your case heavily depends on the specific facts of your case. Consequences of domestic battery can range from a “fine not exceeding two thousand dollars ($2,000), or by imprisonment in a county jail for a period of not more than one year, or by both.” Felony Domestic Violence known as Corporal Injury on a Spouse or Cohabitant under Penal Code Section 273.5 carries up to four years in prison.
