Oxnard Collision Results in Death of Bicyclist

Posted by Dan Kann | May 29, 2020 | 0 Comments

The Southern California weather and traditionally busy streets make bicycling a common form of transportation in the area. Though vehicles and bikes try to share the road, bicycle accidents can still happen. Recently, an Oxnard traffic collision involving a car and a bicyclist resulted in the death of the cyclist.

Oxnard police department responded to the scene of the crash that occurred early in the morning, around 4:30 a.m. KEYT News reported that a Honda Civic was driving on Statham Boulevard and hit the cyclist. The cyclist sustained very serious injuries--emergency personnel responded and attempted to save him, but the cyclist died at the scene due to his injuries.

The driver of the Honda Civic did stay at the scene and cooperated with police and investigators. The exact cause is still under investigation and it is not known if drugs and alcohol or speed contributed to the cause. If it is determined that the driver of the car is responsible for causing the accident, either because of his negligence or intentional bad acts, that driver will be liable to the family of the cyclist for his wrongful death

Dangers of Cycling

Though cycling can be an efficient way to commute and even a fun way to get around town, cycling can be especially dangerous for the cyclists. Cycling can be dangerous for a variety of reasons including:

  • The fact that a bike has no barrier between the road and the cyclist
  • A bike is smaller in size and thus less visible to drivers
  • Bad road conditions can cause a cyclist to fall, sending them into traffic
  • Drivers can be distracted and not look out for cyclist
  • The size and speed of a car can cause devastating injuries or death if a collision occurs

Because of these dangers it is crucial that you use caution when biking and always be aware of your surroundings. Taking other safety precautions like using a helmet, wearing reflective material and using a light when biking in the dark, and always following traffic laws can help make your rides safer.
